HIV/AIDS prevention messages for Canadian Aboriginal Youth
HIV/AIDS is a serious concern for Aboriginal youth. Those under 30 years
old account for almost 1/4 of Aboriginal people living with AIDS, and
almost 1/3 of new HIV infections among Aboriginals. Clearly then, Aboriginal
youth are not getting the message that HIV is preventable. Since almost
2/3 of the Canadian Aboriginal population is under 30, this is particularly
frightening.
In 2001, CAAN’s membership identified youth issues as a priority.
In 2002, the "HIV/AIDS Prevention Messages for Canadian Aboriginal
Youth" project was born. The goals of this two year project are:
• to create an inventory of existing Aboriginal, youth-specific
HIV Prevention messages/programs
• to review selected literature on HIV/AIDS prevention messages
for Aboriginal and Indigenous youth
• to make recommendations on how to design, develop and implement
effective Aboriginal, youth-specific HIV prevention messages
This project is guided by a National Steering Committee made up of energetic
and committed Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal youth who are currently involved
in HIV/AIDS peer education and prevention. This project will be complete
on March 31, 2004 and the final report will be posted on CAAN’s
website. For more information please contact Tracey Prentice at traceyp@caan.ca,
