Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network Petition

[ View all | Add your voice | Français ]

HIV/AIDS is a serious health issue, often faced with stigma and discrimination toward those living with it. Stigma and discrimination affects whether people will step forward for care, treatment and support, when HIV-positive, while also stopping others for getting to know the facts or to go for HIV testing. We can change this! We the undersigned do hereby commit to ending HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination. Sign on the dotted line, and make your voice count.

An old pioneer who witness the journey for 20years and plus. Stigma/discrimination was always our issue before the illness. If we can address this for our peoples from since it began to todays times with HIV then we have progressed. I never gave up hope I still live. Shout and shout proud! CAAN

I support all measures to stop all forms of discrimination across the globe. I am in full support of the Canadian Aboriginal Community to stamp out abuse, discrimination and any form of stigmatisation towards any person with HIV/AIDS. I wish that all communities would embrace Positive People and accept them as they are. It is hard enough battling a world of racism and discrimination theough a white system. My prayers are with all Positive People and their families in the hope that some day a cure will be found.

i think not knowing anything is the biggest problem. Condoms are laughed at most but not spoken of...When a women has a condom, it's self respect, when a man has a condom it's self respect...so where is the self respect of the being alive and protecting those you wanna "tap that?" with????

HIV/AIDS has made the world small, but the lives that live on it count. We need them all. We all have some kind of purpose here and we have something to offer each other. SUPPORT for each other's journey. We must spread the news 1) HIV/AIDS can only be sexually transmitted 2) that infected people need lots of love while they are undergoing treatment because they are really scared and, 3) protect oneself during sex. Peace-Love to all people.

In most cases people living with HIV/AIDS are marginalized and have extremely poor living conditions, low income and in lots of cases no ability to work and therefore are dependent on the income levels set by the government for income assistance and must supplement rent by using money from their food budget. This then causes a domino effect, low food budget which then translates into little or no availability for protein, fresh fruit, vegeatables and grains to give them a healthy diet which then in turns causes them less chance of recovering and feeling better.

I dont know why some people judge people with either AIDS/HIV positive...this is like any other disease that is out there.. but one have to be more careful about it..Some people must realize that you dont get it through shaking hands with them and also talking to them.. so never judge on people who has the disease..its like judging the people with Hep a,b,& c and also the herpes virus..please feel to have a open mind toward others in warm heart.. than the evil that is out there..

Having worked in a volunteer capacity for over 13 years in the education, awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDs, I know to well the discrimination and stigma that is attached to individuals living with this disease. In our communities the survival of vulnerability - grim, degrading, and sinister - is remarkable. We ignore it because we share with all communities at all times the capacity for not seeing what we do not wish to see. It enables us to travel in comfort under the street lights and broken store fronts of Wellington St. West to the lush precincts of the Westboro Village. But while our failure to notice this behaviour can be explained it cannot be ignored. It is the grandest of our social failures and disgraces. People are vanishing!

The researchers I work with are concerned that HIV/AIDS and other BBVs disproportionately affect indigenous peoples as a result of the loss of policies for political, economic and social marginalisation. Sadly stigma and discrimination are the source of universal human suffering, regardless of background, region, culture, religion, etc....all over the world.
