I'm Ready, I'm Indigenous Project

The I’m Indigenous and I’m Ready project is an Indigenous-led initiative dedicated to uncovering the gaps and barriers in HIV testing and healthcare faced by Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. For one year, this preliminary program brings together four Indigenous communities in collaboration with REACH Nexus and the I’m Ready campaign, generously funded by ISC and REACH Nexus.
At its heart, the project seeks to deepen our understanding of how INSTI HIV self-testing kits can be effectively implemented and delivered to meet the unique needs of each community. The Data Coordinator employs a Two-Eyed Seeing approach, blending the strengths of Indigenous knowledge with Western insights to create a holistic framework for understanding and interpreting the information that was shared.

Throughout the project, Indigenous traditions were honored to foster spaces where people could come together to learn about HIV in culturally relevant ways. In each community, sharing circles were designed to provide a safe and respectful environment for individuals to voice their personal experiences and concerns regarding HIV, all while being assured that their stories were met with openness and without judgment.

As we explore the challenges Indigenous people face in addressing HIV and its associated factors, we recognize that many issues are rooted in the impacts of colonialism and anti-Indigenous racism. These systemic challenges often exceed our available resources, but we remain committed to addressing them.

Building strong relationships with communities within the constraints of a one-year timeline poses its challenges. However, we discovered that traditional ceremonies and spiritual connections play a crucial role in strengthening these bonds. Together, we are paving the way for improved health and well-being in our communities, fostering understanding and resilience every step of the way.
