DECOLONIZING HEALTHCARE THROUGH CULTURE
We’ve learned that Indigenous, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada who have experienced discrimination tend to delay seeking medical attention and even then, will often downplay, ignore or even deny symptoms of ill health.
Our journey so far has demonstrated the importance of reclaiming culture as a means to improved health outcomes. As we immerse ourselves in traditional ways of knowing and doing, we look to not only decolonize, but re-Indigenize healthcare for ourselves and our communities.
Currently, VOW is using the sacred teachings of traditional ribbon-skirt-making as a tool in wholistic healing. We invite all organizations who work with Indigenous women to join us – VOW will provide teachings and a beautiful handmade applique of the historic international AIDS red ribbon.
